Day 11 Albarracin to Uña

Albarracin is an interesting fortified medieval town with a huge wall running down the hillside above it. We left the campsite and spent a while wandering around the town.

We continued out of this well-protected town by passing through a tunnel beneath it and winding up a deep gorge into more open land. The road rose again onto a plateau where we came across the source of the Tagus, the longest river in Spain. There was an interesting monument to mark the spot.

The road ran across a remote plateau. There were no villages or facilities for 53km and the landscapes became increasingly wild.

By now we had spent a lot of time adding and removing waterproofs and warm layers as the few moments of warm sunshine gave way to increasingly heavy showers and hail.
We had hoped to reach the campsite at Cuenca, making a day of about 105km, but a combination of fatigue and the weather decided us to go for the hotel at Uña. Despite having to phone the manager and wait for 30mins for someone to arrive with a key, this is a good decision. It's a beautiful spot and we have eaten an enormous meal where we have been offered all sorts of extra desserts and liqueurs to sample.
Tomorrow promises to be better weather and we hope for a longer stage, especially as we will be leaving these really rugged mountains behind.

Albarracin to Uña - 80km, 700m ascent.
