We were aiming for the next campsite and giving ourselves time to visit Guadalupe and its monastery. After the first village of Cañamero the landscape changed yet again and we were heading for the mountains once more.
Our route into Guadalupe took us back to the Via Verde and over the enormous viaduct built to take it into the town. This is yet another railway which was never used....
Very useful for cyclists to avoid a long descent and then a huge climb up to the town though!
The monastery was interesting. For us the highlight of the obligatory guided tour was the library full of 15th century illuminated music manuscripts which were absolutely beautiful (no photography allowed). There were some very nice paintings too, by Zubarán, el Greco and Rubens. The mudéjar cloisters were lovely. However we found it hard to deal with the reliquary room, full of severed hands and skulls etc.
The highlight of the tour for most seemed to be the revealing of the Black Madonna - the whole "raison d'être" of the place, but which to us by then felt totally pagan.
After zipping down under the railway viaduct we're camping again, for the first time since Seville. It's good!
Logrosán to Guadalupe - 41km, 400m ascent.
