We left the nice grassy campsite in Segovia to cycle the few kilometres into the town. We turned off the main road and followed the spectacular Roman aqueduct into the city. There were thousands of swallows darting everywhere in the early morning sunshine.
We would like to have spent more time here, but are a little anxious about pushing on towards the Pyrenees as we don't have much time in hand if we encounter bad weather or have any problems.
After a wander through the town to the Alcazar we left through a surprising arch.
We followed yet another via verde for 50km through pretty, but empty countryside. We hadn't passed an open shop on our way through Segovia and now there were no villages. Nothing for it but to lunch on bread and honey!
Eventually we were back on the roads and into the small town of Coca with its castle.
We were now in the area of the Duero Valley which was at one time the border between the Moorish South and the Catholic North. As a result many towns have fine castles.
Cyclists going in the opposite direction had sung the praises of the campsite at Peñafiel and in spite of our late start after sightseeing in Segovia we decided to push on to try to get there. After 125km we arrived at 9.00pm.
Fortunately we had eventually found an open shop, so were able to cook a proper meal on arrival and didn't have to resort to more bread and honey!
Segovia to Peñafiel - 125km, 350m ascent.
